Electrical Engineer, Printed Circuit Board Design - Electronics Team

As an electrical engineer in printed circuit board design, you will be responsible for conceptualization, schematic development and layout, rapid prototyping, and testing of PCBAs for certified and prototype aircraft including inverters, battery management systems, flight controls, instrumentation, and more. You will work closely with mechanical and software engineers to integrate certified aircraft-ready designs, troubleshoot existing concepts, and support day-to-day electronics needs. 

How you will contribute to revolutionizing electric aviation:

  • Design circuit boards for certified aircraft in Altium Designer following Beta Design Standards, aircraft requirements, and applicable industry standards and guidelines including IPC 2221, ARP4754, etc. Participate in the testing and certification of these designs.
  • Develop hardware for embedded systems related to data acquisition, motor control, avionics, etc. and include associated board-level and off-board communication
  • Select and integrate PMICs and off-the-shelf dc-dc converters for board-level power rails. Work with power electronics engineers to integrate custom designs into PCBAs. Designing to reduce EMI and testing for EMC.
  • Design analog front-ends/signal conditioning circuitry for sensors and receivers
  • Create symbols/footprints/components in Altium Designer for certified designs and plan for component lifecycle management 
  • Support R&D electronics development using KiCad for rapid prototype designs
  • Work with Beta’s Purchasing and Manufacturing teams to design for long-term production and lifecycle support.
  • Minimum Qualifications we are seeking (your Knowledge, Experience, and Abilities):

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or similar
  • 2+ years of experience in circuit board design including schematic and layout
  • Embedded system design, especially based around STM32 microcontrollers or similar. Schematic and PCB design of mixed-signal systems ensuring signal and power integrity.
  • Hardware design for serial communication protocols, especially including CAN, SPI, I2C, and UART.
  • Mechanical stackup/arrangement of multi-level boards and thermal management
  • Experience in analysis of component stress, tolerance, digital timing, stability, and board-level power
  • Git or other CI/CD file management
  • Slack, Google G -Suite including drive, mail, calendar, docs, sheets, etc, 
  • Self-starter that is well organized and a good communicator
  • Above and Beyond Qualifications that will distinguish you (preferred qualifications):

  • Experience with standards for aircraft design and PCB design: ARP4754, DO-178, DO-254, IPC221, IEC 60664-1
  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or similar
  • 5+ years of experience in circuit board design, mastery of circuit board design software (Altium Designer or KiCAD preferred).  
  • Impedance-controlled designs for high frequency signals and wireless communications
  • Power electronics/detailed power supply design
  • Designing and testing for EMI mitigation and EMC
  • Experience with circuit simulation software (LTSpice Preferred). Experience analyzing the frequency response of analog front-ends and the open/closed-loop responses of control systems is a plus. 
  • Experience in Python or other data processing tools 
  • Programming embedded systems
  • Physical Demands and Work Environment:

    This position will be based in the electronics lab and will involve hands-on electronics work includings soldering. This role may occasionally need to assist with installations of equipment on proof-of-concept aircraft.
