As an Intern on BETA’s Battery Team, you will develop a deep understanding of our energy storage system design and use that knowledge on a daily basis to support our ongoing design efforts with tasks such as safety and electrical test design from cell to pack level.  We are seeking open-minded and outside-the-box thinkers. You will work with a small team to constantly improve the safety and efficiency of our products, whether taking a supporting role in designing test campaigns or using CAD and a fully staffed machine shop to build new test fixtures and support equipment. You will be an integral part of the safety of the aircraft and lay the groundwork for electric aviation firsthand. You will be challenged every day and definitely have a lot of fun!

How you will contribute to revolutionizing electric aviation:

  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the battery pack to help continuously improve our understanding of cells, use of materials, and battery safety.
  • Support hands-on thermal runaway, electrical and environmental testing of cells, and high voltage DC energy storage systems.
  • Develop and conduct various tests consistently and methodically to produce concise, actionable results.
  • Support regular inspection, cleaning, and servicing of pack-scale test equipment: thermal chambers, vibration table, electrical cyclers.
  • Support data analysis and high-level test summaries; assist in maintaining and improving a database of test results.
  • Operate required machinery and equipment in a safe manner following established safety requirements in accordance with company and government regulations and guidelines, maintain a neat and clean work area, follow established tool and instrument control procedures, and report any unsafe acts or conditions to team members.

  • Minimum Qualifications we are seeking (your Knowledge, Experience, and Abilities):

  • Pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in any Engineering discipline from an accredited University (Electrical or Mechanical preferred).
  • Proven experience with relevant design software.
  • Previous experience or knowledge of high voltage DC electrical systems and/or battery energy storage systems.
  • Demonstrated interest or hobbies related to electric vehicles or batteries (i.e. home built electric vehicles, AERO club at school, etc.).
  • Experience with hands-on fabrication and assembly (particularly with jig/fixture design).
  • Good team communication skills. 
  • Experience with Google G-Suite including Drive, Mail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Charts, Hangouts; Slack.
  • Above and Beyond Qualifications that will distinguish you (preferred qualifications):

  • Experience with design verification and testing (mechanical, electrical, battery cell) or high voltage (HV batteries preferred).
  • Basic competency with Python and Simulink.
  • Previous FEA or CFD analysis experience.
