Battery Manufacturing Engineer – Equipment Design

BETA needs someone who has experience in designing tooling for low and high-volume manufacturing in and out of the aerospace sector. Your work will be to coordinate the design and build of tooling for the battery pack manufacturing of BETA’s Alia aircraft. You will work with internal design and manufacturing teams as well as our Tier 1 suppliers and other vendors to assist in design for manufacturing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Rapidly concept, design, build, implement and iterate production tooling
  • Inform design teams on product iteration for manufacturability (DFM)
  • Design manufacturing equipment, fixtures, and drive process specifications for battery testing/bonding in addition to custom automation equipment
  • Select, collaborate and act as the primary point of contact with external vendors inside and outside the aerospace industry
  • Author and track vendor requirements and specifications
  • Create world-class scalable manufacturing processes
  • Own and drive a part of BETA’s manufacturing process from design through manufacturing ramp
  • Understand certification requirements and assess and reduce certification risks in the overall process
  • Select and collaborate with external vendors inside and outside the aerospace industry 
  • Orchestrate internal and external teams to meet schedule and design requirements
  • All around good person and fun to work with
  • Part 23 professional experience in the design of high precision manufacturing tooling
  • Strong mechanical design skills
  • Experience with managing scopes of work from design through to production
  • A background in automation and design for automation
  • Experience with vendor CMs (contract manufacturers), ECMs (engineering change management), change orders or similar
  • Exposure to rapid manufacturing growth and preferably startup experience
  • Comfortable with frequent change of direction, dynamic work environment, and a track record of performing under pressure
  • Strong foundation of aerostructure design and problem-solving skills, statistical process control, and design of experiments
  • Understanding of design for assembly, lean manufacturing, and capacity planning 
  • Hands-on and practical understanding of state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

  • 3 years of CAD experience in Catia, 3Dx, SolidWorks, OnShape or other like application
  • 3 years of experience in tooling design

  • Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

  • Min 5 years of CAD experience in Catia, 3Dx, SolidWorks, OnShape or other like application
  • Min 5 years of experience in tooling design, preferably in the aerospace industry
