The Electric Propulsion Simulation Engineer is responsible for the development, and validation, of the models and simulations which inform our Electric Propulsion System, control systems, and interface design.
As an Electric Propulsion Simulation Engineer at BETA technologies, you will work closely with the electric propulsion team to keep our design models up to date, develop new tests, evaluate different controls methods, and collect the data required to validate the models against the design. This includes modeling of high-voltage, high-power inverters, mechanical systems, and control systems. You will work with the systems, flight sciences, and batteries teams to deliver simulation results and models for accurate aircraft-level simulation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop controls and fault detection algorithms for our motor controls.
Develop models of R&D and production motor and inverter hardware (concentration on controls and electrical systems).
Study failure test cases using models.
Produce models which are compatible with models created by other team members.
Participate in team model development.
Produce models usable for a closed-loop software bench test (hardware in the loop testing).
Working closely with the flight sciences, and other system teams to keep test data up to date, and performing simulations to support understanding of the data and the models.
Work with the team to improve the state of the art for our modeling efforts, and integrations.
Design tests, write test plans, write test software in order to validate models
Reviewing and specifying tests on hardware to refine and prove the validity of models.
Tool development, as necessary, to help with simulation automation, and automated evaluation for the test results.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):
BS in Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience, with a strong controls or power focus from an accredited university
5+ years of experience in the simulation or implementation of power electronic systems, motor drives, and/or other inverter-fed drives.
Self-starter that is a well-organized, disciplined, team player, with strong communication skills.
Experience implementing real-time controls of motor drives.
Experience modeling electrical systems, mechanical systems, and software systems.
Expert in Field-Oriented Control and Self-Sensing/Sensorless Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines
Expert at modeling and testing control systems in Simulink.
Experience with programming in MATLAB and Python.
Experience with GIT, or other software version control systems
Experience using electrical test equipment: Oscilloscope, meters, data acquisition, spectrum analyzers.
Familiar with Google G -Suite including drive, mail, calendar, docs, sheets, slides, charts, hangouts; slack, confluence, application lifecycle
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):
Advanced Degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience, focusing on the control or modeling of motor drives, power electronics systems, or similar systems.
Familiarity with Stateflow, and Simscape.
Experience with SPICE based modeling software for power electronics (PSIM, LTSpice, etc).
Familiarity with embedded software development in C.
Experience with brushless DC motor drives.
