The Test Engineer is responsible for hands-on safety testing and improvement of the high-voltage energy storage system in a first-of-its-kind, fully electric aircraft. As a Test Engineer at BETA Technologies, you will develop a deep understanding of our energy storage system design and use that knowledge on a daily basis to support our ongoing design efforts with tasks such as safety and electrical test design from cell to pack level. As an open-minded and outside-the-box thinker, you will perpetually strive to supplement your past industry experience with new knowledge gained every day through experimentation and analysis of results. You will work with a small team to constantly improve the safety and efficiency of our products, whether taking a supporting role in designing test campaigns or using CAD and access to a fully staffed machine shop to build new test fixtures and support equipment. You will be an integral part of the safety of the aircraft and lay the groundwork for electric aviation firsthand. You will be challenged every day and probably have a lot of fun.
How you will contribute to revolutionizing electric aviation:
Hands-on Thermal Runaway, electrical, and environmental testing of cells and high-voltage DC energy storage systems
Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the battery pack to help continuously improve our understanding of cells, use of materials, and battery safety
Develop and conduct various tests consistently and methodically to produce concise, actionable results
Perform regular inspection, cleaning, and servicing of pack-scale test equipment: thermal chambers, vibration table, electrical cyclers
Perform data analysis and high-level test summaries; Help maintain and improve a database of test results
Use all mandated safety equipment and comply with all safety requirements in accordance with company and government regulations and guidelines
Perform other work-related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications we are seeking:
Bachelor of Science degree in any Engineering discipline from an accredited University, Electrical or Mechanical preferred
Previous experience or knowledge of high voltage DC electrical systems and/or battery energy storage systems
Previous experience or knowledge of environmental test equipment including thermal chambers, vibration tables, electrical cyclers
Ability to assist in problem analysis and independent decision-making
Ability to operate hand and power tools
Ability to interpret drawings, specifications, and schematics of battery/electronic components
Previous Python, LabVIEW, or similar programming experience preferred
Good team communication skills required
Google G -Suite including Drive, Mail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Charts, Hangouts; Slack
