Senior Battery Engineer - Cell Characterization

The Sr. Battery Engineer is responsible for driving all cell decisions and informing the designs and packaging of our advanced energy storage systems. As a Sr. Battery Engineer at Beta Technologies you will work in a small team environment to refine our test processes and develop a robust testing regimen to allow us to rapidly evaluate new cell technologies against our key parameters for both flight missions and certification. You will use your past knowledge and understanding of cell electrochemistry and battery cell mechanical design to develop a deep understanding of cell degradation and failure mechanisms to inform the development of battery packs, modules and battery management systems. You aren’t afraid to dig into failed battery modules or dissect cells to drive a deep understanding of one of the most critical components of our aircraft. You will interface directly with suppliers, help form new relationships and assist our global supply chain team as we build new partnerships. You will be challenged every day and probably have a lot of fun.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Develop robust cell testing regiment to efficiently develop a thorough understanding of potential new battery cell technology
  • Work closely with our test team, design teams and battery management system software/algorithms team to help drive critical decisions and resolve challenges
  • Maintain an organized database of cell test data to support certification efforts
  • Coordinate external testing as needed
  • Interface with suppliers and help build critical battery cell partnerships
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with both internal & external customers
  • High energy, self-motived, organized and detail-oriented

  • Qualifications

  • MS degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or other Engineering degree with associate battery cell experience from an accredited University.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in hands-on testing and characterization of lithium-ion batteries
  • Experience with data analysis tools such as Python
  • Strong interest in developing and shaping a fast-paced program to support the development of safe, high energy density aircraft energy storage systems
  • Experience working through certification of a product a plus – FAA certification experience preferred
  • Self-starter that is well organized, disciplined, team player and well versed in the structural analysis.
  • Good team, communication and leadership skills required. 
  • Google G -Suite including drive, mail, calendar, docs, sheets, slides, charts, hangouts; slack, application lifecycle
